In an attempt to cross the Atlantic in his 20-foot rowing boat, a 48-year old German man run into difficulties, when his boat 'Lady Georgia' was damaged by rough seas and capsized 5 times, while on a voyage from USA (Boston) to the UK. After 48 days, he had remained without fresh water and food for three days, risking dehydration and exhaustion and getting hurt in an attempt to save his life.
Our vessel Federal Elbe, which happened to be in the area, received a distress call from RCC Halifax and immediately proceeded to the distress position, deviating from its voyage. The crew of our vessel performed a successful search and rescue operation on the 2nd of September 2004 that resumed at 1635 GMT. The survivor immediately received medical care and is now recovering.
